About This Exhibition:

The Society of Sussex Painters Sculptors and Printmakers (SSP)

“100 Years: As We See It Now” (1924-2024)

The Society of Sussex Painters was founded in 1924 as a contemporary to the Bloomsbury Group, holding its inaugural exhibition at Worthing Museum and Gallery, and continuing to do so there and around  Sussex until this present day.

Its 20 members were established artists who had gravitated to Sussex with many members having significant solo careers exhibiting in top London galleries, as members of other societies, and within the field of publications.

Notable artistes included Arthur Rackham, Claude Muncaster, Morgan Rendel and Bertram Nicholls.

Between 1930 and 1950 the Society of Sussex Painters became connected with the Brighton School of Art. Several of its members were war artists notably Dorothy Coke. From the 1950’s the inclusion of Sculptors and Printmakers refected more ccommercial and graphic forms of art,  with many eminent tutors and students such as  Charles Knight, Louis Ginnett,, Juliet Pannet, Luther Roberts and Brighton Art College principal Ernest Alfred Sallis Benney.

Current membership include 18 practising Artists working in the field of; portrait, figurative, landscape, abstract, illustration, sculpture and printmaking. And we are proud to be following in the footsteps of our past members, keeping with traditional techniques, being inspired by our heritage and exhibiting works of a high standard.

‘100 Years. As We See It Now’

As part of our centenary year, and after our Residency at Worthing Museum and Gallery, we are pleased to be exhibiting yet again at The Grange Gallery which our late president, Barry Hinchliff, had set-up in the early 1990s.

We are proud be sharing our exhibition with a small but select archive of original works by local Rottingdean artists and former SSP members, Dorothy Coke and former Head of Brighton College, Bill Blackshaw.
